In June of 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung traveled to Pyongyang to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. His visit marked the first time since the Korean War that a direct flight had gone out from Seoul to Pyongyang and was marked by elaborate festivities on the North Korean end, including a welcoming parade of over 600,000 North Koreans. Although Kim Jong Il was initially distant, he quickly warmed up to the South Korean president, cracking jokes and chugging red wine. Many were shocked by his jovial behavior, and the British weekly The Economist put out this amusing headline to commemorate the event.
